Austrian post-metal band Hills Like White Lions will release their third full-length album, Canary, on 9 October.

Set in outer space, Canary is a concept album exploring the challenges of growing up through a science-fiction story, while pushing the band’s atmospheric post-metal sound into some heavier territory.

The band describe Canary as both their most personal and heaviest album to date, with the new record also marking the first time they have incorporated shouted vocals into their music.

“For the very first time we incorporated shouted vocals to reflect the horrors the main character experiences throughout the story,” the band explain.

The album was created by Florian Wagner on vocals and guitar, Alexander Augustin on bass, Hannes Lettner on drums, and new member Reinhard Farnberger on synths and vocals.

Canary also features guest appearances from Eklatanz of Heretoir and Pipi Gogerl of Novena and Ancient Fragments, while Norbert Leitner returns as producer.

Artwork for the album was created by Thomas Gasperlmair, whose previous collaborations include Gojira and Elder.

The new record follows the band’s self-titled debut from 2020 and Meander from 2023, with Hills Like White Lions continuing their run of concept-focused releases while expanding the sound they have built over the past six years.
