Lo, Run & Kilat @ Crowbar
School night shows can be a hit or miss - thankfully tonight was a hit, and a massive hit at that. Wether you were just coming in for Crowbar’s Thursday trivia or to have your face melted by one of the best triple threat bills I’ve seen in a long time, Crowbar was the place to be tonight! With some overdue catch ups, burgers & schooners, the doors opened.
Kilat, who I have been lucky enough to see already this year at Dark Mofo, opened proceedings with a wall of obnoxious and unrelenting black metal. With Karina Utomo fronting you know it’s going to be epic. Throw in some of the nastiest tone porn from guitarist Benjamin Andrews and the smoothest blasts & grooves by drummer Rama Parwata, and you’ve got one of this countries best black metal acts opening this show.
With barely enough time to talk about how good that was we’re rushed back in to catch Run. Another band I saw at this year’s Dark Mofo. Run rip through tracks off their 2020 ep ‘For You Will Never Find Peace Within Your Quiet’, with the unique ability to go from the monster MAC2 stage to the intimate Crowbar stage. Run’s brand of epic post/blackened/death/metal (labels are hard) fit everywhere I have seen them which is a testament to their talents. Finishing the set with a cover of The Goo Goo Dolls ‘Iris’. I don’t care who you are, a blackened version of this song makes everyone happy.
Anyone playing tonight could be headlining but when Lo hit the stage you knew you were witnessing masters at their craft. A setlist filled with the usual bangers ‘As Fools Ripen’ & ‘Judas Steer’, new tracks & finishing up with ‘The Tongueless Ep’ in full. I said it at the start and i’ll say it again, this was one of the best triple threat bills in a very long time.
