Interview by Elliott Smith
Towards the end of 2022, I had the pleasure of seeing Remission in Sydney. Their performance was a captivating display of meticulous skill and precision, leaving the audience and myself in awe. With their second album Impermanence set to release this Friday, July 21 2023, I decided to have a chat with Jackson the bands vocalist/guitarist to gather some insights about the upcoming release.
Hey Jacson, let’s begin by introducing yourself and your role in the band.
Hey dude. I'm Jacson, the lead singer and guitarist in Remission, a Melodic death/thrash band from little old Perth in Western Australia.
Vocals and guitar! It’s always a pleasure to see someone shred and do vocals much akin to the likes of revocation & sylosis which I can definitely hear in remissions sound would I be wrong to say those bands influence you guys? Also what other things inspired you while writing the new record?
You're not wrong at all! Both those bands, as well as Children of Bodom are my main influences when it comes to what I do in Remission. A lot of things inspired me while writing this album. Mostly wanting to take things to the next level musically and skill wise, and a lot of personal hardships over the years were used as a kind of fuel to help it all come together. Musically, we called on a lot of our mutual influences to help with the creation of the songs. Bands like Gojira, Mastodon, Strapping Young Lad, Earth Rot, Devin Townsend and many others made their mark on this one.
Well I personally think you have been successful in your mission, your back catalogue is impressive but the two songs you have released off of impermanence show a more defined and technical sound. Can you give us some insight on the recording process of impermanence and if you did anything different this time around ? I really enjoyed the clean vocal section in your latest single Pollux is this something you have done before?
Thanks heaps man! The recording process was super long, I think it took about 10 months to a year all up to get everything locked down. We took our time (obviously) to make sure everything was just how we wanted it sound wise. One thing we did that we never did before was doing vocal pre-production! Which was definitely a helpful process in getting all the patterns and lyrics down before final vocal takes. And yeah, the Cleans have been something I've wanted to do for ages - I've always enjoyed hearing the clean vocals to offset the abrasiveness of some of the music we write. First time recording them for Remission and I think they worked out quite well!
I believe the addition of clean vocals is exceptionally tasteful and seamlessly complements the overall sound. The evident effort and dedication you invested in these tracks has me eagerly anticipating the rest! I had the opportunity to see Remission in Sydney late last year and was fortunate enough to catch your other project, Suneater, last month as well. Now that you have gained considerable experience on the East Coast, are there notable differences compared to Perth?
Thanks heaps man! I'm glad they came out so well and served the purpose for which they were added. There are quite noticeable differences between the two scenes. The bands on the east coast are incredible (not a sleight at all against the talent here), but the bands on the east coast I've experienced playing shows with are insanely supportive of their fellow bands. Standing in the crowd or up the front for each band on whatever lineup they're on, always happy to lend gear and have deep yarns. There's a bit more variety in the bands on the east coast, and the demographic seems to be a little younger than we are used to here on the west coast. People also shoe up to Sunday and weekday gigs there which is sick! I also love how everyone rocks up for the very start of gigs over there! Overall we feel insanely welcomed when we venture eastwards and I always look forward to going over!
It's great you have built a strong bond with the fans and bands over here! I'm glad to hear that you had a great experience on both occasions, and the response was fantastic. Hopefully, we'll have the opportunity to see you perform on this side of the country again soon. Speaking of shows, do you have any plans for the album release?
It's always been great to get over east! We have a tour in August alongside our friends in Freedom of Fear and Flaming Wreckage that covers all major east coast cities which I am super keen for. Its gonna be the shred tour of the year in my opinion haha. After that, we come home and play the newly minted Electric Eye festival in September alongside Orpheus Omega and a slew of sick local talent. That covers our plans for now, but I'm sure we will have more ventures eastwards and at home which I look forward to greatly!
That sounds like an amazing lineup! I'll make sure I get to one of the shows! I want to thank you for taking the time for a chat Jacson I wish you all the best for the upcoming tour and the highly anticipated release of Impermanence this Friday!
Thanks heaps man! Look forward to releasing this baby and seeing you and everyone else out there.
